What a Mask Defines
A mask is a path on a layer. It can define a visible region or mark the boundary of a target surface. A four-point mask can provide clear corner positions, but the mask itself does not automatically create a perspective transformation.
What a Corner Pin Controls
A corner pin maps the four corners of source content to four destination points. Moving those points changes the apparent perspective and placement of the content. The order of the corners matters: top-left, top-right, bottom-left, and bottom-right must correspond consistently.
Manual Setup Concepts in After Effects
- Identify or draw a four-point mask around the target surface.
- Prepare the layer or precomposition that contains the content to place.
- Apply a four-corner pinning effect or control to that content.
- Match each corner control to the corresponding mask vertex.
- Inspect the result at full frame and close up.
- Adjust the points carefully when the mask or target changes.
A mask-based setup is not the same as tracking. If the surface moves, a separate tracking or animation workflow may still be required.
Mapping a Masked Region to Four Corner Points
Start with a mask that has exactly four meaningful vertices. Decide which vertex represents each destination corner, then map the corner-pin controls in the same order. If the mapping crosses over itself, check the vertex order before adjusting the shape by eye.
Use the Composition viewer to inspect alignment and keep the mask or guides visible while placing the points. Confirm that content edges follow the intended surface rather than the full layer bounds.
Common Limitations of Manual Setups
- Corner controls often begin at the layer or composition bounds rather than the masked area.
- Each point must be placed and checked individually.
- Vertex order can produce crossed or twisted mappings.
- Changes to the mask may require another manual fit.
- The setup does not replace planar tracking or match moving.
A Faster Workflow with MaskPin
MaskPin fits four perspective pins directly to a selected mask area. On layers with multiple masks, you can select the required mask, and the pins fit automatically. A four-point mask can use its actual vertices, while interactive handles let you adjust pins in the Composition viewer.
MaskPin is a native After Effects effect built for setup, not a full tracking or match-moving system. It can also render selected mask outlines, vertices, corner pins, and the connecting frame when those guides are part of the intended output.
