Why Duplicate Footage Is a Problem
Duplicate footage makes the Project panel harder to navigate and creates uncertainty about which item points to the intended source. It also adds unnecessary project complexity and increases the risk of deleting or replacing the wrong item during cleanup.
Two items can look identical while being used by different compositions or pointing to different source paths. Treat visual similarity as a reason to investigate, not as proof that an item is safe to remove.
The Manual Method in After Effects
- Inspect footage items in the Project panel.
- Compare their file names and source paths.
- Identify items that point to the same source media.
- Determine which footage item should remain as the master.
- Replace or consolidate references carefully before removing duplicate items.
Do not simply delete duplicate-looking footage. First confirm which compositions and layers reference each item, then make sure those references point to the master you intend to keep.
Safe Cleanup Checklist
- Save a backup copy first.
- Confirm the source path for every candidate.
- Choose the master footage item.
- Verify usage before removing duplicates.
- Check affected compositions after consolidation.
- Save and reopen the project after cleanup.
When Manual Cleanup Becomes Slow
